String Construction

Construction is another key component of string performance. D’Addario offers a variety of construction methods to help you achieve your perfect tone and feel:

Round Wound – The most popular and universal construction, delivers that traditional textured feel most players are familiar and comfortable with.

Polished/Flat Tops - We start with a finished round wound string then carefully flatten the tops of the windings through our unique polishing technique. Flat Tops deliver a smoother feel and reduced finger noise with the flexibility and tension of a round wound string. Great for recording, flatpicking and slide guitar.

Silk &Steel – Silver-plated copper wrap wire interwoven with silk-like fibers for soft, easy fingering and a mellow tone. Preferred by many folk and fingerstyle players.

Metallurgy 101

String alloys can have a dramatic impact on your tone, feel and string life. Here is a quick look at D’Addario’s diverse selection of acoustic string alloys:

80/20 Bronze – Composed of 80% copper and 20% zinc, commonly referred to as brass, the original acoustic string alloy selected by John D'Addario Sr. and John D'Angelico in the 1930s. A popular choice for recording due to its crisp, deep and projecting tone.

Phosphor Bronze – 92% copper and 8% tin with phosphorous, introduced to string making by D'Addario in 1974 as the first “extended life” strings. Synonymous with warm, bright, and well balanced acoustic tone. 

Silver-plated Copper – The choice for classical and folk guitar due to its soft, comfortable feel and warm, mellow tone.

EXP Technology

Welcome to EXP Coated Technology, the most natural sounding coated strings available!

How do we do it? D’Addario has developed exclusive wire coating machinery which allows us to fully control all critical variables in the coating process. This groundbreaking process draws wire from rod, anneals, cleans, coats, cures and spools in one continuous process ensuring adherence to extremely tight tolerances. Every spool of wire is tested with sophisticated laser refraction technology which measures coating concentricity to 10,000th’s of an inch ensuring unmatched consistency.

This micro-fine coating is applied to wrap wire PRIOR to winding. Strings are wound normally producing an uncoated feel and tone that last at least 4 times longer.
